Improving visitor experience through a visually cohesive wayfinding family

The Breakers is Newport Mansions’ premier property, attracting hundreds of thousands of visitors per year. They needed a new wayfinding system to replace their existing ad-hoc collection of signage and help visitors navigate the grounds more easily. I helped produce a new signage family that included a new map, new graphic standard, and five different sign types.

User experience audit

Using data collected through field observation, interviews, and a survey, the team mapped various users’ journeys throughout the grounds. This helped locate sign locations at critical decision making nodes, ensuring that the necessary messaging was present at each node.

A sign audit of existing signs revealed the different types of wayfinding needed, while also demonstrating the need for a cohesive signage system.

Creating a new graphic standard for signage

The existing signage was a disconnected collection of signage reflecting many different eras of branding. The team reimagined the graphic standard for signage, referencing the “Gilded Age” era of the mansion itself through bronze and gold signs throughout the grounds. A subtle acorn motif lines the edges of each sign—a nod to the Vanderbilt's family motto: “Great oaks from little acorns grow”.
