Tasked with creating an infographic with as many data sets as group members, our group used data from the City of Boston to examine the relationship between projected sea level rise, property value, and demographic data.
Since three different sets of data needed to be encoded into one graphic, we devised a visual system that read clearly as a cohesive whole as well as stand alone graphics. Using both different tints (blue) to encode population diversity and different hatch densities (pink) to encode property value, emergent patterns became visible in the combination of these two different encodings.
The emerging “hatches” that resulted from these two encodings then allowed us to better identify what type of communities and properties were most at risk from rising sea levels.
