This temporary pavilion set in Boston's Chinatown explores how my previous experiment with granular packing could be applied to a pavilion typology.
My design uses gabion walls filled with gravel aggregate to create not only a temporary pavilion for the community of Chinatown, but also a new ground plane for the site after the deconstruction of the pavilion. This structural framework extends the lifespan of the pavilion past just its physical construction.
The framework of the gabion wall system allows for the pavilion's transparency to be played with, by filling each wall to different levels with aggregate. The wall system also transforms the pavilion into a public art exhibition space.
