Completed for my typography II studio, this project explored how a book’s content could inform its layout and design. I chose the Japanese architectural movement Metabolism as the content for my book–a post war movement characterized by the ideas of organic growth, flexibility, and megastructures.
Referencing Metabolist principles of modularity and infinite expansion, this book unfolds both horizontally and vertically. This layout allows for different unfolding patterns and accommodates various image and text layouts.
The white bandage paper tape that binds the pages together adds a concrete texture to the book, referencing the movement’s material palette. The back of each page also has a dynamic cubic pattern which takes inspiration from the Metabolism Movement’s iconic Nakagin Capsule Tower.
