Tasked with rethinking graduate housing for Northeastern that fit within the framework of Boston’s walk-up housing typology, this project focused on improving the living quality through daylighting and sectional interest.
The dumbbell shaped module creates deep lightwells when combined together through module aggregation, bringing light deep into the space–even on lower levels. The use of switchback stairs as the main circulation arm allows the housing to respond to the natural topography as well as create moments of sectional interest inside the units.
Internal unit circulation allows the module to retain a compact footprint, maximizing unit density without compromising interesting sectional living arrangements–with double height spaces reflecting served spaces. Drawing inspiration from Ando’s Row House, the project focused on projecting a rather flat facade with a more complex interior spatial arrangement hidden behind it.
