Encouraged to create spatial relationships using non-traditional materials, I chose to explore the idea of granular packing. This idea is centered around the use of a skin to house a large volume of small aggregate. When densely packed, the aggregate then gives both shape and structure to the skin without the need of additional support.
Using stockings as the skin and rice as the aggregate, these structures began to form spatial relationships to each other. After establishing the placement of each skin/aggregate tube, I examined how different scales could affect the public space they created and how users could occupy this space.
This study in granular packing was then used as a starting point for my Chinatown pavilion, which deployed a similar strategy to the pavilion typology.
